Books Ireland Flash Fiction competition open for submissions

Books Ireland with National Book Tokens welcomes flash fiction submissions for Independent Bookshop Week

Are you a flash fiction writer? Poetic, epistolary, discursive, historical, speculative, cinematic, theatrical, whichever way it comes, you have the merry month of May to send us your best work.

Independent Bookshop Week takes place 15-22 June 2024 throughout Ireland and the UK, and to help celebrate, National Book Tokens are offering the best kind of prizes for book lovers, with the top three stories receiving book gift cards of €150, €100, and €50.

The competition is free to enter, and the winning stories will also be published in Books Ireland.

Deadline for submissions is 01 June, 2024.

Guidelines

  • Deadline for submissions is 01 June, 2024.
  • Word count has an upper limit of 500 words; there is no minimum word count.
  • First place is a €150 book gift card from National Book Tokens; second place is a €100 book gift card from National Book Tokens; third place is a €50 book gift card from National Book Tokens.
  • Winners will be published in Books Ireland.
  • We welcome previously unpublished submissions from anyone, anywhere.
  • Any font or style is fine, as long as it is clear.
  • All submissions are read blind, so please keep your document free from any identifying information.
  • All submissions will be read by editor Ruth McKee.
  • Please send your story as an attachment to flashfiction@wordwell.ie.
  • Please be aware that this email is for submissions only, is active only during the submission window, and that no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Copyright remains with the author, but we reserve the right to publish winning stories in any future Books Ireland anthology. 
  • Winners will be contacted on or before 22 June, 2024.
