Children’s Books Ireland launch Pride Reading Guide with An Post
Ahead of celebrations across the country this weekend, Children’s Books Ireland have launched their Pride Reading Guide with An Post.
Including 100 books featuring LGBTQIA+ inclusive stories, this guide offers a hundred ways to build confidence, solidarity and allyship in children and young people.
Books from Irish authors and illustrators are highlighted with a shamrock symbol. There’s something for every child, with picture books, fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels and more included.
Featured titles
The featured titles include favourites such as Elmer by David McKee (Penguin) and Heartstopper by Alice Oseman (Hachette), the adaptation of which has recently become a massive success on Netflix. Also featured are newcomers Our Big Day by Bob Johnston (O’Brien Press), Grandad’s Camper by Harry Woodgate (Andersen Press), and The Henna Wars by Adiba Jaigirdar (Hachette).
“Positive representation on the page is so important: it is crucial that every member of the LGBTQIA+ community can feel seen and heard in the stories we tell,” said Elaina Ryan, CEO of Children’s Books Ireland. “And it is clear that there is still much work to do to build empathy, understanding and allyship from an early age. Happily, the list of excellent books has grown since last year, and we hope it will continue to grow year after year.”
