Laureate na nÓg Patricia Forde encourages reading as Gaeilge to children to foster a love of the language
Laureate na nÓg Patricia Forde is encouraging adults who want to pass on the Irish language to the next generation to read as Gaeilge with the children and young people in their lives.
Ahead of Seachtain na Gaeilge Forde is launching a new Irish language reading guide Treoirleabhar Léitheoireachta 2025 this Friday. The guide is a collaboration between Foras na Gaeilge and Children’s Books Ireland with the support of Love Leabhar Gaeilge.

‘Our language and culture is steeped in the traditions of storytelling, so what better way to keep Irish alive in our homes or to find a way into the language as a learner than through children’s books,’ said Forde, speaking ahead of the launch.
‘Treoirleabhar Léitheoireachta 2025 from Children’s Books Ireland is filled with 100 brilliant recommendations, encouraging young readers aged 0–18 to pick up a book as Gaeilge. I believe that one of the best places to start with language learning is to pick up a book, exploring new words together with the help of illustrations, rhyming text and the excitement of a brand-new story.’
