The Sea Serpent

A storm blew up. The troubled sea gave birth:
a snaky monster breasted the wave-surge,
encircled the Cog, chomped on its own tail
in play or hellish malice – none could tell.

Trapped in that ring, the boat was madly thrown;
Brendan loved the ride, from trough to crown.
His crew were not so blithe or God-uplifted:
belly contents mirrored faith, and shifted.

Insouciant Brendan prayed: ‘Mindful Lord,
deliver us from this beast, cathedral-jawed.
Its dark idea of fun will drag us down.
Undoom this moment; let us live, not drown.’
