Sean O’Reilly delivers masterclass in narrative perspective at the Yeats Society, Sligo as part of the Irish Writers Centre Writers in the Regions initiative
A special in-person fiction masterclass with acclaimed writer Sean O’Reilly will take place at the Yeats Society, Sligo on Saturday 24 May 2025, from 10.00am to 3.00pm.
Presented by the Irish Writers Centre as part of its new Writers in the Regions initiative, the masterclass is open to writers of all levels and focuses on one of the most important craft questions in fiction: who tells the story?
Participants will explore narrative perspective, voice, and the emotional and structural impact of point of view, guided by one of Ireland’s most distinctive literary talents.
‘The author discovers a narrator, who discovers a character, who is discovering a story, all done in front of the reader, who rediscovers the limits of the reading self,’ said O’Reilly. ‘In this masterclass, I want to help writers understand that the choice of point of view is primarily about the nature of the truth a fictional story is actually able to create, and the relevance of that truth in today’s world.’
the masterclass focuses on one of the most important questions in fiction—who tells the story?
A member of Aosdána, Sean O’Reilly is the author of Love and Sleep, The Swing of Things, Watermark, and the acclaimed short story collections Curfew and Levitation.
This event is part of the Irish Writers Centre’s wider ambition to bring high-quality literary experiences beyond Dublin, into Ireland’s vibrant regional writing communities. CEO of the IWC, Mags McLoughlin said that they were thrilled to be working with Sean O’Reilly and the Yeats Society in Sligo ‘to ‘deliver this exceptional learning opportunity for writers based in the west and beyond.’
