The Irish monthly bestseller charts are out!
The monthly bestseller charts are out, covering the four week period of sales ending the 29th of April, and now that the flush of sales of special edition books sold for World Book Day in March have petered out, we’re getting numbers and trends that are probably far more accurate to the amount and genre that the general public are reading.
Children’s Books
This is particularly true in Children’s Books, with the latest Dogman topping the charts, this time taking his adventure A Thousand Fleas Beneath the Sea, closely followed by lots of the regular children’s charts toppers, David Walliam’s and Jeff Kinney’s latest RoboDog and the 17th Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Peppa Pig Goes to Ireland, re-enters the charts and Derek Landy’s newest Skullduggery Pleasant ‘Hell Breaks Loose’ features in the top ten in the first month of its release, alongside the staple appearances from some of the popular teen TikTok titles, Girl in Pieces from Kathleen Glasgow and teen mystery queen, Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
Non-fiction
In the nonfiction charts, the Bored of Lunch series continues to top the charts with its airfryer and slowcooker meals that are getting us through our days working from home. We’re building healthy bodies and habits by reading up on our hormones with Dr Mary Ryan’s It’s Probably Your Hormones and manifesting our dream lives with Atomic Habits and Glow: Five Steps to Create the Life You Dream About.
A new addition to the charts this month is Killing Thatcher: The IRA, the Manhunt and the Long War on the Crown by Rory Carroll, the only history title in the top ten this month, and while the weighty shadow of the Irish housing crisis looms large, Ciarán Mulqueen’s How to Buy a Home in Ireland: A Guide to Navigating the Irish Property Market comes to the rescue, maintaining its spot in the top ten again this month.
Fiction
The mystery of Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent still has readers hooked in the fiction charts, topping off the list with over 6,000 copies sold last month, followed by John Banville’s latest, The Lock-Up – be sure to catch to his recent episode on Burning Books with our editor Ruth McKee here.
Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us is, as always, present in the top of the charts, while Bonnie Garmus’ Lessons in Chemistry makes a reappearance in the top ten for the first time in a while, perhaps due to the trailer release last month of the planned TV series adaptation starring Brie Larson.
Similarly, Harlan Coben’s newest thriller, I Will Find You has shot up in position thanks to the roaring success of the Netflix show based on his previous work, Stay Close.
Some changes and new entries have shaken up the charts a little this month, but largely we’re seeing little change in the fiction and nonfiction titles, with heavy hitters like My Father’s House and Good Vibes, Good Life staying well within their shelf life for the foreseeable.
