Cillian Murphy has won a best actor Golden Globe for his leading role in Oppenheimer
Cillian Murphy has won best actor at the 81st Golden Globe Awards for his role in Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer, a film which picked up five awards including best director, best supporting actor, best original score, and best film.
Thanking Nolan, his fellow actors, and producer Emma Thomas, Murphy said that “one of the most beautiful and vulnerable things about being an actor is that you can’t do it on your own. We had the most incredible ensemble cast in this movie.”
Today, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin TD congratulated Cillian Murphy on his achievement.
Martin said that 2023 was a hugely successful year for Irish film production and Irish talent, and that she hoped this Golden Globe award was a good sign for further acclaim for the large pool of talent in the Irish film industry.
“This award for his title role in Oppenheimer is a wonderful and well-deserved recognition of the immense talent of Cillian Murphy. Since his debut in Disco Pigs, he has shown himself to be a master of his craft and has secured his place for many years now as one of Ireland’s foremost and best-loved actors. This year’s Golden Globes success serves to secure his place in the history of film and among the very best in the world.
“The increase in the Section 481 Tax Credit Cap from €70m to €125m should enable the industry to entice even more productions to Ireland where they have access to outstanding talent both behind and in front of the camera. The raising of the cap should lead to further achievements in all sectors working in film including animation and VFX.”
