Myths, legends and literary mischief—Hinterland Festival children’s strand offers packed programme for young readers
From treasure hunts and faerie folklore to monster-making and picture book fun, this year’s Hinterland Festival of Literature & Arts in Kells, Co. Meath (26–29 June 2025) offers a vibrant and imaginative children’s programme designed to inspire young readers of all ages.
The dedicated strand for children and families features interactive storytelling sessions, creative workshops, arts and crafts, and a town-wide treasure hunt based on the theme Myths and Legends.
Young book lovers will have the chance to meet authors and illustrators, take part in nature-themed art activities, and explore the world of Irish folklore, fantasy, and adventure. Events are tailored for a wide range of ages, with sessions for children as young as 3, right up to workshops designed especially for preteens and teenagers.

Children will uncover Ireland’s lesser-known faerie folk, discover what it’s like to host young footballers from Palestine, invent their own creepy creatures, and draw their wildest holiday memories – all under the guidance of some of Ireland’s most exciting children’s authors and illustrators.

‘We’re incredibly proud of Hinterland’s children’s programme,” said festival director Geraldine Gaughran. ‘Hinterland is the only literature festival in Ireland with a dedicated and extensive strand for children and families. We’re looking forward to welcoming children of all ages to Kells this June – there’s something for everyone, from toddlers to teens.’
While the children’s programme runs throughout the weekend, there’s plenty on offer for parents too. Hinterland 2025 will feature more than 50 events, including appearances from Martin Sixsmith, John Banville, John Boyne, Lara Marlowe, Kevin Barry, Roisín O’Donnell, Jack Lukeman and many others. Visitors can enjoy author interviews, history talks, musical performances, and the return of festival favourites including the Hinterland Type Trailand Lit Crawl.
