Jessica Traynor receives the Field Day Tundish Award 2024

Poet and essayist Jessica Traynor is the recipient of the Field Day Tundish Award 2024

Jessica Traynor is the 2024 recipient of the Field Day Tundish Award for contribution to the arts in Ireland, which was presented to her on Bloomsday by Theo Dorgan and Stephen Rea at a ceremony in the Merrion Hotel, Dublin.

The Tundish Award was established in 1999 with the intention of celebrating the genius of James Joyce while also honouring artists across different disciplines who have made a significant contribution to the arts in Ireland.

Jessica Traynor is the author of Liffey Swim, and The Quick, both published by Dedalus Press, and Pit Lullabies published by Bloodaxe Books. She is the 2023 recipient of the Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Award, and a previous winner of the Hennessy New Writer of the Year Award. She is poetry editor at Banshee Press, and is a Creative Fellow of UCD.

‘This cannot be real. I must wake up’: Our nightmares teach us that we haven’t yet understood what we need to understand—Jessica Traynor‘s essay in The Irish Times

“The Tundish Award recognises the work of the artist, and also their contribution to their community,” said Jessica Traynor. “During Theo Dorgan’s wonderful citation, my poetry was mentioned alongside my work in raising awareness around direct provision, the genocide in Gaza, and my work with the Tuam Oral History Project.

“It’s an honour to have these initiatives recognised with the poetry I write, as to me they are inextricable. I’m so glad that this award exists, and truly honoured to join the ranks of past recipients.”
