Longford Lights Festival—interactive experiences and calming installations
The Longford Lights Festival 2024 kicks off this Friday 23 February at Connolly Barracks in Longford Town, running each evening over the weekend from 6pm to 9pm.
The largest community based arts lights festival in Ireland, Longford Lights has thousands of lights on display across twenty-eight art installations, many of which are interactive.
Visitors will experience an illuminated journey through the Connolly Barracks campus, with installations from twenty-three artists who worked with forty-three schools and community groups from around county Longford. Over 11,000 people attended last year and this year is anticipated to be even bigger.
Led by Artistic Director Caroline Conway, there will be more performance and interactive elements to the festival this year, including from international acclaimed Spanish troupe Cal y Canto Teatro. There will be plenty to experience with samba drummers, fire dancers and gigantic video projections brimming over with vibrancy, alongside the calming, beautiful, lantern installations which local crowds have now come to know and love.
Looking forward to the event, Longford County Council Cllr Colm Murray said it was great to see Longford Lights back and growing in confidence as it promises to be even bigger than last year. “I look forward to the fantastic atmosphere which this festival brings to Longford Town. I encourage everyone to book your free tickets and come along to see this spectacle.”
“Longford Lights is different than other festivals in the way that the local community is the foundation of the whole project,” said Artistic Director Caroline Conway. “Working together with both international and more local artists, this year’s festival promises to be more interactive for audiences and we can’t wait for you to see it!”
Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon said that Longford Lights Festival demonstrates the Council’s commitment to the arts. “We look forward to seeing what all the artists and the local community will showcase this coming weekend.”
