National Women’s Museum to be considered in new Advisory Committee chaired by Dr Sandra Collins
A National Women’s Museum is just one of the exciting initiatives being considered by a new Advisory Committee, appointed by Minister Martin and chaired by UCD Librarian Dr Sandra Collins.
The committee has been set up to look at the under-representation of women’s voices and contributions in all aspects of Ireland’s history, from the political to the scientific to the cultural. The committee will then recommend how best to show these contributions in our national institutions and collections.
As part of their work to create dedicated presentations of women’s stories, the committee will consider the possibility of a National Women’s Museum, among other ideas such as a re-imagining of the National Collection, and other appropriate initiatives.
The committee will consider best practice models within cultural policy internationally, undertake a broad public consultation, and support the national cultural institutions in reviewing the national collections.
The committee met for the first time this week, on 08 May, and Minister Martin welcomed an encouraging and productive discussion.
“The members bring a wealth of experience and expertise to their roles, which will support the consideration of complex and sensitive matters, inclusively and thoughtfully,” said Minister Martin, speaking after the event. “I am very grateful for their constructive engagement and enthusiasm, and I wish them well in what will be a very ambitious and important programme of work.”
Dr Collins said she was honoured to be appointed to the new role by Minister Martin, and said that she was looking forward to working with the team to make “meaningful recommendations on the representation of women and women’s stories.”
