With readings and writing prompts, Fiction on the Rails promises a unique experience

It’s not unusual to hear writers say that they like writing away from their desk, whether that’s for a change of environment, the sonder of people watching, or to ensure domestic tasks and procrastination don’t take over. Sometimes that means a café or pub, or maybe a hotel lobby. But you’ll also hear of writers who love the liminal spaces of travel—and what better place than a train compartment?

This year Dublin Book Festival brings a novel idea to the programme. Choose a book to bring with you and get on the Dublin-bound train from Cork, along with short story exemplars Madeleine D’Arcy, Laura McKenna and Danielle McLaughlin, and prepare to listen to your hosts read from Cork Stories, quietly read your chosen book, and then pick up your pen to follow the prompts to write your own story.

Alight on the 10.25am Cork – Dublin Heuston train on Saturday 9th November in a reserved carriage. The ticket will also include optional free entry to the Dublin City Libraries Readers’ Day event at the Festival Hub in The Printworks, Dublin Castle (2.30pm – 5.10pm), or you can enjoy Dublin City in your own way before making your way back to Cork on the 7pm train.
